Why Visit the Darjeeling War Memorial?
Constructed in 1995, the Darjeeling War Memorial was built to commemorate the brave Gorkha soldiers from the Darjeeling region who laid down their lives in various wars and conflicts post Indian independence. The memorial is brilliantly situated at the exact center of the Batasia Loop, creating a powerful focal point amidst the sprawling, manicured gardens and the spiraling tracks of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.
Because the memorial sits inside the Batasia Loop complex on Hill Cart Road (about 5 km from town), it is effortlessly visited as part of the famous Darjeeling 3-point morning sightseeing tour. After catching the sunrise at Tiger Hill, your driver from Siliguri Cab Rental will drop you at the gates. Here, you can pay your respects at the cenotaph, watch the Toy Train circle the monument, and take in the awe-inspiring views of the Kanchenjunga snow peaks.
