Experience the Divine at Dhirdham Temple

Built in 1939, the Dhirdham Temple is a magnificent replica of the famous Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu. Located just below the Darjeeling Railway Station, it offers a peaceful retreat with striking Tibetan-style architecture. Book your local taxi drop today.

Why Visit the Dhirdham Temple in Darjeeling?

Constructed in 1939 by Purna Bahadur Pradhan, the Dhirdham Temple is one of the most visually distinctive Hindu temples in Darjeeling. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple was designed by the Gorkha architect Beg Raj Sakya to be a near-exact replica of the world-famous Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal. It features a stunning, multi-tiered white pagoda-style roof that beautifully blends traditional Hindu elements with Tibetan architectural influences.

The temple is located just below the bustling Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Station. Because the station area is a major transit hub with heavy traffic, finding parking or navigating the crowded streets on foot can be quite a hassle. By booking a town drop with Siliguri Cab Rental, our drivers can safely navigate the congested Hill Cart Road to drop you directly near the temple entrance, making it a perfect quick stop before or after your Toy Train Joyride.

Highlights: What You Will Experience

Dhirdham Temple is a peaceful oasis right next to the busy town center. Here is what to expect.

Pagoda Architecture

The exterior of the temple is incredibly striking. The multi-tiered, overlapping roofs and intricately carved wooden doors mirror classic Nepalese architecture, providing fantastic opportunities for cultural photography.

Pancha Bakram Shiva

Inside the temple compound is a white statue of Lord Shiva known as "Pancha Bakram Tri Netram," depicting the deity with five faces and three eyes, representing different universal moods and perspectives.

Proximity to the Toy Train

Because it is located right next to the Darjeeling Railway Station, you can hear the iconic whistle of the steam engine from the temple courtyard. It’s the perfect serene stopover before boarding your train.

Temple Visit Checklist

What to Know Before Entering

The temple is a sacred space located in a highly busy area of town. A quick, prepared visit is best.

Modest Clothing

As with all places of worship in Darjeeling, dress respectfully. Ensure your shoulders and knees are covered before stepping into the temple compound.

Clean Socks & Footwear

You must remove your shoes before entering the main shrine area. Wear comfortable, thick socks, as the stone floors can get quite cold during the autumn and winter months.

Camera Etiquette

Taking pictures of the unique pagoda-style exterior is highly encouraged. However, taking photos directly of the inner sanctum and the main deity is generally prohibited.

Toy Train Tickets

If you are visiting the temple right before your Joyride, ensure you have your IRCTC tickets and Government ID ready in your bag, as the station is just minutes away.

Best Time to Visit Dhirdham Temple

Because it is located in the lower, busier part of town near the station, timing your visit can make a big difference in avoiding traffic and crowds:

Early Mornings (8:00 AM to 9:30 AM)

This is the most peaceful time to visit. The heavy traffic around the Darjeeling Railway Station has not yet built up, allowing you to appreciate the temple's architecture and morning prayers in quiet serenity.

Before Your Toy Train Joyride

Most tourists visit the temple immediately before or after their scheduled DHR Joyride. It is a fantastic way to spend 30 minutes productively while waiting for your train to depart.

Mahashivaratri (Feb/March)

As a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, Dhirdham comes incredibly alive during the festival of Mahashivaratri. The complex is heavily decorated, and devotees from all over the hills come to offer prayers. Expect large, vibrant crowds.

How to Reach Dhirdham Temple & Local Taxi Details

Navigating the Station Area

The Dhirdham Temple is located right below the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Station, close to the town's main Motor Stand. Because it is situated in one of the most highly congested, lower parts of Darjeeling town, walking there from the upper Chowrasta/Mall area involves navigating steep downhill roads alongside heavy vehicular traffic. If you have luggage or are traveling with family, hiring a Darjeeling local taxi for a drop is highly recommended.

Because of its proximity to the railway station, the most efficient way to visit Dhirdham Temple is to schedule your visit immediately before or after your Darjeeling Toy Train Joyride. You can simply ask your taxi driver to drop you slightly early for your train.

Town Drop Taxi Fares

Dhirdham Temple is typically not included in the standard 7-Point sightseeing tour. Instead, visiting the temple is treated as a local "Town Drop" or is easily combined with your railway station transfer.

At Siliguri Cab Rental, we can arrange a quick, point-to-point drop to bring you from your hotel directly to the temple/station area. The local taxi fare for these short drops varies depending on your exact pickup location and the current traffic conditions on Hill Cart Road. Contact us via WhatsApp for a quick, fixed-rate quote.

Dhirdham Temple FAQ

Common questions about visiting the Pashupatinath replica.

Is the temple an exact replica of Pashupatinath?

Visually, yes. The architect designed the beautiful multi-tiered pagoda roof and the carved wooden doors specifically to mirror the architectural style of the famous Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Is photography allowed inside the temple?

You are welcome to take as many photographs of the stunning exterior pagoda architecture as you like. However, photography of the inner sanctum and the main Shiva deity is generally prohibited. Please respect the signs posted around the temple.

How far is it from the Darjeeling Mall (Chowrasta)?

It is about 1.5 to 2 kilometers downhill from Chowrasta. While walking down takes about 15 minutes, walking back up the steep incline can be tiring. Because it is so close to the Railway Station, we recommend visiting it via a taxi drop when you come down for the Toy Train.
