The Ultimate Guide to Gangtok Sightseeing Cabs and Tour Packages

Gangtok, the mesmerizing capital of Sikkim, offers a unique blend of vibrant Buddhist culture, modern amenities, and raw Himalayan nature. Whether you want to witness the majestic Mount Kanchenjunga from Tashi View Point or touch the snow at the Indo-China border, booking a dedicated Gangtok sightseeing taxi is the only way to maximize your holiday.

Because Gangtok has strict traffic regulations and hilly terrain, outside commercial vehicles (like those from Siliguri or Bagdogra) are not permitted to conduct local sightseeing. You must hire a local, Sikkim-registered taxi. We provide access to the finest fleet of local luxury SUVs, sedans, and hatchbacks, coupled with drivers who double as knowledgeable local guides.

The Alpine Frontier: Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir & Nathula Pass

No trip to Sikkim is complete without venturing to the high-altitude glacial lakes. This full-day excursion takes you from the bustling streets of Gangtok (5,400 ft) to the breathtaking heights of the Himalayas.

  • Tsomgo (Changu) Lake (12,400 ft): Located 40 km from Gangtok, this oval-shaped glacial lake remains frozen during winter. It is held sacred by the local Sikkimese people. Enjoy a yak ride along the lake's banks.
  • Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir (13,123 ft): A unique shrine built in honor of an Indian army soldier. It is widely believed that his spirit still protects soldiers patrolling the inhospitable border terrain.
  • Nathula Pass (14,140 ft): A part of the ancient Silk Route, this is an official border post between India and China (Tibet). You can see the border gates and Chinese military bunkers. Please note: Nathula is closed to tourists on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Understanding Sikkim Sightseeing Permits

While local city tours (7-point and 10-point) do not require special permits, traveling to Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir, and Nathula Pass requires a Protected Area Permit (PAP) issued by the Sikkim Police and Tourism Department.

We handle all permit processing for our guests. You simply need to provide us with a photocopy of your valid photo ID (Voter ID or Passport—Aadhar cards are often not accepted for border permits) and two passport-sized photographs the evening before your journey. Note that foreign nationals are permitted up to Tsomgo Lake but are completely restricted from visiting Nathula Pass.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Are infants allowed to visit Nathula Pass?

Due to the extreme altitude (over 14,000 ft) and thin oxygen levels, it is highly recommended that infants, young children below 5 years, and elderly individuals with breathing or heart issues avoid visiting Nathula Pass and Baba Mandir.

Do I need to carry warm clothes for Tsomgo Lake in summer?

Yes. Even in May or June, the weather at Tsomgo Lake can be extremely windy and freezing. You must carry heavy woolens, gloves, and caps. Alternatively, you can rent snow boots and heavy jackets from shops along the way to the lake.

Why are standard sedans not allowed to Nathula?

The road to the Indo-China border is steep, rugged, and prone to heavy snow and landslides. The local tourism and police authorities mandate high-clearance, high-power luxury SUVs (like Innova, Xylo, or Scorpio) for passenger safety.
