The Historic Tea Valley

Experience the Serenity of Rangaroon

Nestled at 6,000 feet, Rangaroon is a breathtaking offbeat tea garden village offering uninterrupted views of Kanchenjunga and the glittering night lights of Darjeeling town. Book your direct NJP taxi drop today.

Why Visit Rangaroon?

Situated at an altitude of 6,000 feet, Rangaroon is a deeply historical and scenic tea garden village located just 16 kilometers away from Darjeeling town. Established way back in 1776 by the British, it was originally developed as a botanical garden by the Lord Governor of Bengal before being converted into one of the region's earliest and finest tea estates. Today, it remains an incredibly peaceful, off-the-grid alternative to the crowded hill station.

What makes Rangaroon truly special is its unique vantage point. From the village homestays, you get a massive, uninterrupted view of the Mount Kanchenjunga snow peaks. After sunset, the view transforms—you can see the entire Darjeeling town glittering like a constellation of stars across the opposite mountain ridge. Surrounded by lush green tea bushes and the towering trees of the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary, reaching this serene valley is easy. Book a comfortable, point-to-point taxi drop from NJP Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport directly to your homestay with Siliguri Cab Rental.

Highlights: What You Will Experience

Rangaroon is a visual treat of rolling tea leaves, snow-capped peaks, and sparkling town lights.

Heritage Tea Trails

Wake up early and take a guided walk through the manicured tea bushes of this 18th-century estate. You can visit the old Rangaroon tea factory, witness the plucking process during spring, and enjoy authentic, locally brewed Darjeeling tea.

The Dual Panorama

Rangaroon is famous for its dual view. By day, the mighty Mount Kanchenjunga dominates the northern horizon. By night, looking across the deep Rungeet valley, you can watch the beautiful, glittering city lights of Darjeeling town.

Senchal Forest Hikes

The village sits right at the foothills of the Senchal Wildlife Sanctuary. You can take short, incredibly peaceful nature hikes into the surrounding pine and oak forests, which are heavily populated with Himalayan birds.

Tea Village Checklist

What to Know Before Arriving

Rangaroon is a quiet agricultural settlement. Prepare for an authentic, off-the-grid homestay experience.

Pre-Book Homestays

There are very few commercial hotels in Rangaroon. Accommodation is strictly limited to locally run homestays nestled among the tea gardens. Since capacity is low, advance booking is absolutely essential.

Carry Cash

Like most authentic offbeat Darjeeling destinations, there are no ATMs in Rangaroon, and the mobile network can fluctuate. Carry enough physical Indian Rupees to pay for your homestay, local guides, and tea packets.

Proper Walking Shoes

The roads winding through the tea estates are beautiful but unpaved and occasionally steep. To safely explore the tea gardens and the nearby river trails, a good pair of gripping walking shoes is required.

Book Dedicated Transport

Public transport connecting Rangaroon to Darjeeling is scarce. Ensure you book a dedicated drop or a sightseeing cab with Siliguri Cab Rental so you can easily travel back into the main city for tours.

Best Time to Visit Rangaroon

Rangaroon is a year-round destination, but the seasons drastically alter its aesthetic appeal:

Spring (March to May) - First Flush Season

This is a magical time to visit if you love tea. Spring brings the famous "First Flush" harvest. The tea bushes are incredibly vibrant, and you can watch the active plucking process. The weather is cool and highly pleasant for garden walks.

Autumn (October to November) - Clear Panoramas

If your main goal is to photograph Mount Kanchenjunga towering over the valley, Autumn is the best time. The monsoon clouds vanish, providing razor-sharp visibility of both the snow peaks during the day and Darjeeling town at night.

Monsoon (July to September) - Lush & Misty

The monsoon turns the tea gardens into a neon, striking green. Heavy mist frequently rolls through the valley, hiding the mountains but creating a deeply romantic, cinematic atmosphere perfect for a quiet staycation.

How to Reach Rangaroon from NJP/Siliguri & Taxi Details

Navigating the Hill Cart Road

Rangaroon is situated approximately 75 kilometers from Siliguri, NJP Railway Station, and Bagdogra Airport. The most common route taken by taxis is via the historic Hill Cart Road (NH110). You will drive past Kurseong, up to the bustling junction of Jorebungalow. From Jorebungalow, instead of heading towards Darjeeling town, you turn right towards the 3rd Mile forest area. A steep, scenic descent from 3rd Mile leads you directly into the Rangaroon valley. The journey from the plains takes about 3 to 3.5 hours.

If you are already staying in Darjeeling town, Rangaroon is extremely close. It is just 16 kilometers away, making for an easy 45-minute drive downhill.

Rangaroon Taxi Fares & Packages

Because Rangaroon is an offbeat village tucked away below the main highway, finding a shared cab from NJP directly to your homestay is very difficult. You would typically have to take a shared cab to Jorebungalow and then find an expensive local drop.

At Siliguri Cab Rental, we provide dedicated, point-to-point taxi drops directly from NJP Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport to your homestay in Rangaroon. The standard fare for a comfortable 4-seater hatchback (like WagonR or Swift) is approximately ₹3,000. Because it is so close to Darjeeling, we highly recommend booking our cab for a day trip to explore the Darjeeling Mall, Zoo, and Tiger Hill while using Rangaroon as your peaceful base camp.
