The Master Passenger Guide: Sikkim Silk Route Car Packages

The Old Silk Route in East Sikkim is not a destination; it is an expedition. Historically functioning as a vital high-altitude trade artery connecting Lhasa in Tibet to the Indian plains via the Jelep La Pass, this route has been transformed into one of the most rugged, visually spectacular, and offbeat tourism circuits in the Himalayas.

Unlike the commercialized tours of Darjeeling or Gangtok, the Silk Route experience is entirely dependent on the vehicle and the driver you choose. Navigating the famous 32 hairpin loops of Zuluk, enduring the biting cold of Nathang Valley, and negotiating military-controlled dirt tracks requires a specialized, heavy-duty Silk Route taxi package. Standard hatchbacks and sedans are completely useless (and strictly prohibited by authorities) on these steep gradients.

When you book your expedition with our Siliguri car rental network, we provide you with a dedicated SUV that stays with you for the entire duration of your 4 or 5-day journey. Furthermore, because this region directly borders international territories, we manage the complex bureaucratic permit processing at the Rongli checkpost on your behalf.

The Crucial East Sikkim Permit System (PAP)

The entire Silk Route, specifically the areas beyond Rongli (including Zuluk, Padamchen, Nathang, and Kupup), falls under a highly restricted military zone.

  • Indian Nationals: Must obtain a Protected Area Permit (PAP). This permit is issued at the Rongli Police Station. To process this, you must carry your original Voter ID or Passport (Aadhaar cards are strictly rejected by the border police for this specific permit) and 4 recent passport-sized color photographs. Your assigned driver will physically take these documents to the police station in Rongli and handle the clearance while you relax.
  • Foreign Nationals (Including OCI): Foreigners are currently NOT PERMITTED by the Indian Army to travel on the Old Silk Route via Rongli due to its extreme proximity to the international border.

Fixed 2026 Silk Route Taxi Package Fares

The fares below cover the dedicated vehicle only (up to 6 passengers) for the entire multi-day expedition, starting and ending at NJP or Bagdogra. The price is comprehensively inclusive of fuel for the extreme climbs, driver outstation allowances, and the bureaucratic permit processing fees at Rongli.

Detailed Itinerary Breakdown: The Recommended 4N/5D Tour

Because the Silk Route involves a massive altitude gain from the plains (400 ft) to Nathang Valley (13,500 ft), acclimatization is vital. Here is how our most popular itinerary structurally unfolds to prevent altitude sickness:

Day 1: Arrival & Acclimatization (Lower Altitude)

Your dedicated SUV picks you up from NJP Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport. The journey begins with a 4-hour drive to a lower-altitude offbeat location like Sillery Gaon (in West Bengal) or Aritar/Mankhim (in East Sikkim). These villages sit at roughly 4,500 to 6,000 feet. You spend the night here to acclimatize, visiting the serene Lampokhari (Aritar) Lake in the evening.

Day 2: Permit Clearance & The Ascent to Zuluk

Post breakfast, the vehicle descends slightly to Rongli, where the driver processes your Inner Line Permits. Once cleared, the real ascent begins. You will drive through dense forests, passing the Quekhola Waterfalls, Lingtum, and Padamchen, finally arriving at the historic village of Zuluk (9,400 ft). Overnight stay in a rustic Zuluk homestay.

Day 3: The High-Altitude Expedition

An early start is required to witness the legendary sunrise over the Kanchenjunga range from Thambi Viewpoint (11,200 ft), which sits atop the dizzying 32 hairpin loops. After breakfast, you push further into the barren, cold desert of Nathang Valley (13,500 ft). The tour covers the Old Baba Mandir, the high-altitude Kupup Lake (Elephant Lake), and the Tukla Valley. Depending on your health and preference, you can stay overnight in the freezing Nathang Valley, or descend back to Zuluk or Padamchen for a more comfortable sleep.

Day 4: Descent to Reshi Khola

Begin the long, winding descent back towards the plains. Spend the night at a riverside retreat in Reshi Khola, located right on the border of West Bengal and Sikkim. It's the perfect way to relax and recount the adventure.

Day 5: Departure

After a final morning by the river, your vehicle transfers you back to NJP Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport, concluding the Silk Route expedition.

Extensive Traveler FAQs

The Silk Route requires serious logistical preparation. We have compiled the most critical questions from our passengers.

1. Is the Silk Route open during winter?

Yes, but with caveats. Heavy snowfall in January and February often blocks the road entirely from Zuluk up to Nathang Valley. During such periods, the military restricts tours, allowing vehicles to travel only up to Zuluk village or Padamchen. If you wish to see extreme snow, winter is beautiful, but expect itinerary changes.

2. Can we visit Nathula Pass during this package?

Geographically, the Silk Route connects to Nathula Pass. However, the military frequently closes the connecting road between Kupup and Baba Mandir/Nathula to civilian traffic. Furthermore, visiting Nathula requires a separate, specific permit issued only from Gangtok. Therefore, Nathula is generally NOT included in a standard Rongli-based Silk Route package. If you wish to visit Nathula, you must route your trip to end in Gangtok and book a separate Gangtok to Nathula taxi.

3. Is it safe to stay overnight in Nathang Valley?

Nathang Valley sits at 13,500 feet. The oxygen levels are thin, and nighttime temperatures routinely drop below freezing. If you have respiratory issues, heart conditions, or are traveling with small children/elderly family members, we strongly advise against staying in Nathang. Instead, we recommend staying lower at Padamchen or Zuluk, and visiting Nathang as a day trip.
