Attraction Overview

Nestled in the Alipurduar district, bordering Bhutan and Assam, the Buxa Tiger Reserve (BTR) is the largest forest in the Dooars. Unlike Gorumara or Jaldapara, which focus heavily on rhino safaris, Buxa offers a diverse blend of incredibly dense jungle, hilly trekking routes, and rich historical significance. The primary entry point for safaris is Rajabhatkhawa.

Deep inside the reserve lies the picturesque village of Jayanti, situated along the sprawling, white-pebbled banks of the Jayanti River. Often called the "Queen of Dooars," it offers breathtaking views of the Bhutan hills. Tourists flock here to hike up to the ruins of the Buxa Fort—a historical prison used by the British to detain Indian freedom fighters—or trek to the sacred Mahakal Cave. Reaching Buxa and Jayanti from Siliguri involves a 160-kilometer drive along the highway, making an outstation cab essential for a comfortable and efficient journey.

Things to Do in Buxa & Jayanti

Make the most of your wildlife and trekking expedition in the deep Dooars.

Trek to Buxa Fort

Start from Santrabari and undertake a moderate 5 km uphill trek through dense forest trails to reach the ruins of the Buxa Fort. The fort sits at an altitude of 2,600 feet and holds immense historical value, once used by the British to incarcerate Subhas Chandra Bose and other freedom fighters.

Jayanti River & Mahakal Cave

Spend a relaxing afternoon walking along the dry, white-pebbled bed of the Jayanti River, forming a natural border with Bhutan. For the adventurous, a thrilling hike up a steep, rocky trail leads to the Mahakal Cave, a sacred stalactite cave dedicated to Lord Shiva, located deep in the jungle.

Buxa Tiger Reserve Safari

Book an authorized Jeep Safari from the Rajabhatkhawa entry gate. While spotting a tiger is exceedingly rare, the incredibly dense, atmospheric forest is home to leopards, elephants, bison, and a massive variety of exotic birds and butterflies. It offers a true, raw jungle experience.

Travel Checklist

What to Pack for Buxa & Jayanti

Combining dense jungle safaris with steep hill trekking requires careful packing to ensure a safe and comfortable adventure.

Heavy-Duty Trekking Shoes

Unlike the flat plains of Jaldapara, exploring Buxa involves actual hiking. The trails to Buxa Fort and Mahakal Cave are steep, rocky, and often muddy. Sturdy trekking boots with excellent grip are absolutely mandatory.

Original ID Proofs

MANDATORY: To enter the Buxa Tiger Reserve or book any forest safaris from the Rajabhatkhawa counters, you must present original, physical copies of your Government ID proof (Aadhar or Voter ID). Digital copies on phones are often rejected.

Mosquito Repellent & Meds

The tropical, humid nature of the Buxa forests means mosquitoes and leeches (especially on the trekking trails) are prevalent. Pack strong insect repellent, salt (for leeches), and basic first-aid supplies.

Sufficient Cash

Network connectivity in Jayanti and the Buxa hills is notoriously poor or non-existent. UPI payments and ATMs will not work reliably. Carry enough hard cash to cover your resort bills, safari tickets, guide fees, and meals.

Buxa Climate & Forest Closure Rules

Buxa represents a unique transition zone where the tropical Dooars plains meet the foothills of Bhutan. The most crucial factor when planning your trip is the status of the National Park rules regarding the monsoon season:

Monsoon (15th June to 15th September) - FORESTS CLOSED

CRITICAL NOTE: The Buxa Tiger Reserve is legally closed to all tourists from mid-June to mid-September every year due to animal breeding season and severe flooding. No jeep safaris are conducted, and trekking trails become highly dangerous and infested with leeches.

Winter (October to February) - Peak Tourist Season

This is undoubtedly the best time to visit Buxa and Jayanti. The monsoon recedes, the forests reopen, and the weather drops to a very comfortable, cool temperature, perfect for the uphill trek to Buxa Fort. The Jayanti River runs clear, and migratory birds flock to the region. Due to high demand, securing your njp to rajabhatkhawa cab early is highly advised.

Spring/Summer (March to early June) - Hot but Clear

The weather becomes quite hot and humid during the day in the lower plains of Rajabhatkhawa, though the Buxa Fort area remains relatively cooler. This is a good time for wildlife enthusiasts, as animals congregate near the remaining water sources in the deep forest.

Comprehensive Guide: Booking Your Buxa & Jayanti Cab and Navigating Safaris

Transit from Bagdogra and NJP to Rajabhatkhawa & Jayanti

To reach the deep eastern edges of the Dooars where the Buxa Tiger Reserve is located, tourists usually enter via the town of Rajabhatkhawa (the primary check post) or proceed further to the village of Jayanti. The journey begins at Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station in Siliguri. The distance from NJP to Buxa/Jayanti is approximately 160 kilometers. This is a substantial highway journey along NH31C that cuts straight through the sprawling tea estates and crosses several rivers, taking roughly 4 to 4.5 hours.

Because Jayanti is located deep inside the forest, completely isolated from major commercial transport hubs, relying on local buses or shared autos with luggage is extremely physically taxing and highly impractical. By booking a dedicated NJP to Jayanti cab or a Bagdogra to Rajabhatkhawa taxi through Siliguri Cab Rental, you secure a highly comfortable vehicle that provides a direct drop to your exact forest lodge. Our competitive dooars taxi fare ensures you avoid the heavy surge pricing often demanded by local airport syndicates for such long-distance drops.

Understanding Buxa Safari & Trekking Logistics

The primary allure of Buxa is its incredibly dense, undisturbed forest and its historical trekking trails. However, it is vital to understand that private outside vehicles (including our outstation cabs) are restricted in core jungle safari zones. To enter the deep forest for a wildlife safari, you must book a government-authorized Gypsy from the official Forest Department ticket counter located in Rajabhatkhawa.

For the Buxa Fort Trek, your cab will drop you at the village of Santrabari. From there, it is a strict pedestrian hike (approx. 5 km uphill) to reach the historical fort ruins. If you plan to visit the Mahakal Cave from Jayanti, you will need to hike along the rocky riverbed and into the hills. Our dooars sightseeing taxi service complements this process perfectly. Our chauffeurs will drive you from your resort to these designated starting points (like Santrabari or the Safari ticket counter), wait for you while you complete your trek or safari, and then safely transport you back.

Vehicle Selection: Why SUVs are Highly Recommended

If your itinerary consists solely of a direct drop from NJP/Bagdogra to a resort located near the main highway in Rajabhatkhawa, a comfortable sedan (like a Swift Dzire or Toyota Etios) is sufficient.

However, if your resort is located in Jayanti, the route involves driving across the wide, dry, and extremely rocky bed of the Jayanti River, as well as navigating unpaved, bumpy forest trails. For these specific offbeat destinations, a high-clearance SUV is strictly recommended. Vehicles like the Toyota Innova Crysta, Mahindra Scorpio, and Mahindra Xylo offer superior ground clearance to prevent undercarriage damage on these rocky riverbeds, ensuring a smooth, secure journey through the wild.

Buxa & Jayanti Travel FAQ

Common questions about safaris, fort trekking, and forest closures.

Is the Buxa Tiger Reserve open during the monsoon?

No. This is a strict government rule. Buxa Tiger Reserve (along with Jaldapara and Gorumara) is legally closed to tourists from June 15th to September 15th every year. No jeep safaris are permitted during this period due to animal breeding season. Additionally, trekking to Buxa Fort or Mahakal Cave during this time is highly dangerous due to slippery mud, flash floods in the Jayanti river, and severe leech infestations.

How difficult is the trek to Buxa Fort?

The trek from Santrabari to Buxa Fort is approximately 5 kilometers long. It is considered a "moderate" trek. The path is continuously uphill but mostly well-defined. It typically takes a person with average fitness about 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the top. Proper walking or trekking shoes are essential.

Can I use my Aadhar Card to get a Safari ticket in Buxa?

Yes. The Forest Department in West Bengal widely accepts Aadhar Cards, Voter IDs, and Passports as valid identification for booking jungle safaris in Rajabhatkhawa. However, you must carry the original physical copy, not just a digital photo on your phone.
