Attraction Overview

Gorumara National Park is the crown jewel of the Dooars region, situated primarily in the Jalpaiguri district near the town of Lataguri. Spread across roughly 80 square kilometers, the park is a medium-sized forest but is highly concentrated with exotic wildlife. It is particularly renowned for its successful breeding population of the great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros, along with Asian elephants, Indian bison (Gaur), leopards, and various species of deer.

Lataguri serves as the main base camp for exploring Gorumara. The town is lined with beautiful eco-resorts and forest bungalows. From Lataguri, tourists access the government-authorized ticket counters to book their Gorumara Jeep Safaris. These safaris take you deep into the jungle to various high-altitude watchtowers like Jatraprasad, Medla, and Chukchuki, which overlook riverbeds and artificial salt licks where rhinos frequently gather. Getting to Lataguri from NJP or Bagdogra requires a dedicated outstation cab, as the public transport network to the resorts is sparse.

Things to Do in Gorumara

Make the most of your wildlife expedition in the Lataguri forests.

Jeep Safari to Watchtowers

The primary activity in Gorumara. You book an open-top authorized Gypsy from the Lataguri counter. These safaris take you through the dense forest trails to designated watchtowers like Jatraprasad or Chukchuki, offering expansive views over the grasslands where rhinos and elephants graze.

Tribal Village Dance

Certain safari tickets (like the evening Medla Watchtower trip) often include an authentic cultural experience. After the forest visit, tourists are taken to a local tribal village where the indigenous communities perform traditional folk dances around a bonfire.

Eco-Resort Relaxation

Lataguri and the surrounding Murti river area are packed with beautiful, nature-integrated eco-resorts. Spending the afternoon relaxing in a hammock, listening to the sounds of the jungle birds, and drinking locally sourced tea is a major part of the Dooars appeal.

Travel Checklist

What to Pack for Lataguri

Traveling into dense, tropical forests requires completely different preparation compared to visiting the snowy high altitudes of the Himalayas.

Original ID Proofs

MANDATORY: To book any forest safari from the government counters in Lataguri, you must present original, physical copies of your Government ID proof (Aadhar or Voter ID). Digital copies on your phone are often rejected.

Earthy Clothing

During jungle safaris, brightly colored clothing (neon, bright red, etc.) can agitate wildlife. Always pack earthy-toned clothes: olive greens, browns, and khakis. Long sleeves and full trousers are highly recommended to protect against insect bites.

Mosquito Repellent

The tropical and humid nature of the Dooars forests means mosquitoes and other insects are prevalent, especially during the evenings at the eco-resorts. Pack a strong, DEET-based mosquito repellent cream or spray.

Binoculars & Sunglasses

Wildlife is often spotted at a distance from the watchtowers to ensure human safety. A good pair of binoculars is essential for spotting rhinos grazing in the tall elephant grass. Sun hats and sunglasses are needed for open-top jeep safaris.

Gorumara Climate & Forest Closure Rules

Unlike the high-altitude hill stations, Gorumara is a tropical floodplain. The most crucial factor when planning your trip is the status of the National Park rules regarding the monsoon season:

Monsoon (15th June to 15th September) - FORESTS CLOSED

CRITICAL NOTE: Gorumara National Park is legally closed to all tourists from mid-June to mid-September every year due to animal breeding season and heavy flooding. No jeep safaris are conducted. While you can still book resorts in Lataguri and enjoy the monsoon greenery, you cannot enter the core forests.

Winter (October to February) - Peak Tourist Season

This is undoubtedly the best time to visit Gorumara. The monsoon recedes, and the forests officially reopen. The weather drops to a very comfortable, cool temperature (perfect for early morning safaris). Due to high demand, securing your njp to lataguri cab and safari tickets early is highly advised.

Spring/Summer (March to early June) - Hot but High Sightings

The weather becomes quite hot and humid during the day in Lataguri. However, this is paradoxically an excellent time for hardcore wildlife enthusiasts. As the smaller water bodies inside the forest dry up, rhinos and elephants are forced to congregate near the larger rivers and artificial salt licks near watchtowers, making animal sightings far more frequent.

Comprehensive Travel Guide: Booking Your Gorumara Cab & Navigating Safari Logistics

Transit from Bagdogra and NJP to Lataguri

To reach Gorumara National Park, the primary entry point is the town of Lataguri. Almost all tourists arrive at Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station in Siliguri. The distance from NJP to Lataguri is approximately 70 kilometers, a highly scenic highway journey that cuts through the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary and the Teesta Barrage, usually taking around 2 hours.

Because Lataguri is essentially a forest fringe town surrounded by tea estates, relying on shared autos or irregular public buses from Siliguri is extremely inconvenient, especially if your resort is located off the main highway. By booking a dedicated NJP to Lataguri cab or a Bagdogra to Lataguri taxi through Siliguri Cab Rental, you guarantee a comfortable, direct drop to your exact forest lodge. Our fixed lataguri local cab fare ensures you avoid the heavy surge pricing often demanded by local airport syndicates.

Understanding Gorumara Safari Logistics

The core attraction of Gorumara is its wildlife safaris. However, it is vital to understand that private outside vehicles (including our outstation cabs) are strictly prohibited from entering the core jungle safari zones. To enter the forest, you must book a government-authorized Gypsy from the official Forest Department ticket counter located in Lataguri.

Our dooars sightseeing taxi service complements this process perfectly. If you book a local sightseeing package, our chauffeurs will drive you from your resort to the forest ticket counter, wait for you while you complete your 2-hour jungle safari in the authorized Gypsy, and then safely transport you back to your hotel or take you to nearby spots like the Murti River. During peak season, tickets sell out rapidly, so arriving early at the counter is essential.

Vehicle Selection: Sedans vs. SUVs for Lataguri

If your itinerary is confined strictly to a direct drop from NJP to a resort located on the main NH31 highway in Lataguri, a comfortable sedan or premium hatchback (like a Swift Dzire) is perfectly sufficient and highly economical.

However, if you plan to venture into offbeat areas around Gorumara, such as the rocky riverbeds of Murti, or if your resort is situated deep inside a tea garden via unpaved dirt roads, an SUV is highly recommended. Vehicles like the Toyota Innova Crysta, Mahindra Scorpio, and Mahindra Xylo offer superior ground clearance to prevent undercarriage damage on bumpy forest trails, ensuring a smooth, secure journey through the wilderness.

Gorumara Travel FAQ

Common questions about safaris, closures, and booking outstation taxis.

Is Gorumara National Park open during the monsoon?

No. This is a strict government rule. Gorumara National Park (along with all other Dooars forests) is legally closed to tourists from June 15th to September 15th every year. No jeep safaris or watchtower visits are permitted during this period due to animal breeding season and heavy flooding.

Does my cab fare include the Gorumara Safari ticket?

No. Booking an outstation cab or a local sightseeing taxi with us only covers your transportation to the forest ticket counters in Lataguri. You must purchase the actual Gypsy safari tickets directly from the Forest Department counter upon presenting your original ID proof.

Can I use my Aadhar Card to get a Safari ticket in Gorumara?

Yes! Unlike the strict military borders of Sikkim where Aadhar is rejected, the Forest Department in West Bengal widely accepts Aadhar Cards, Voter IDs, and Passports as valid identification for booking jungle safaris in Gorumara. However, you must carry the original physical copy, not just a digital photo on your phone.
