Attraction Overview

Located just a few kilometers away from Lataguri and Gorumara National Park, the Murti River and the adjacent Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary offer a slightly more secluded and incredibly scenic experience in the Dooars. The Murti River, originating from the Neora Valley in the Himalayas, flows gently over a bed of white pebbles. It is the perfect spot for afternoon picnics, gentle wading, and relaxing outside your eco-resort.

Just across the river lies the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary. While smaller than Gorumara, Chapramari's canopy is significantly denser. It is widely regarded as one of the best elephant corridors in the state. Jeep safaris here take you to the famous Chapramari Watchtower, where tourists frequently spot massive herds of Indian Bison (Gaur), wild Asiatic elephants, and diverse bird species gathering near the salt licks. Reaching the Murti resorts from NJP or Bagdogra requires a comfortable 2 to 2.5-hour drive via National Highway 31, making a pre-booked outstation cab highly necessary.

Things to Do in Murti & Chapramari

Make the most of your wildlife and riverside expedition in the Dooars.

Riverside Picnics & Bathing

During the dry winter and spring months, the Murti River becomes shallow and clear. Tourists frequently sit on the white pebbles, dip their feet in the cool mountain water, and enjoy picnics. The WBTDC Murti Tourist Lodge is situated right on the banks, providing stunning sunset views over the river.

Chapramari Jeep Safari

Book an authorized Gypsy from the Lataguri or Murti forest counters. The safari takes you deep into the incredibly dense canopy of Chapramari. The primary destination is the Chapramari Watchtower, strategically located near a water body where Indian Bison (Gaur) and massive elephant herds come to drink.

Suntalekhola & Bindu Visit

Use your dedicated sightseeing cab to take a half-day trip further north. Visit the picturesque suspension bridge at Suntalekhola, surrounded by orange orchards, and drive up to Bindu, the last village on the Indian side bordering Bhutan, offering great views of the Jaldhaka Dam.

Travel Checklist

What to Pack for Chapramari

Traveling into dense, tropical riverine forests requires completely different preparation compared to visiting the high altitudes of the Himalayas.

Original ID Proofs

MANDATORY: To book any forest safari from the government counters in Lataguri or Murti, you must present original, physical copies of your Government ID proof (Aadhar or Voter ID). Digital copies on your phone are frequently rejected.

Earthy Clothing

During jungle safaris, brightly colored clothing (neon, bright red, etc.) can agitate wildlife. Always pack earthy-toned clothes: olive greens, browns, and khakis. Long sleeves are highly recommended to protect against insect bites in the dense canopy.

Mosquito Repellent

The tropical and humid nature of the Dooars forests means mosquitoes and other insects are highly prevalent, especially during the evenings near the Murti riverbed. Pack a strong, DEET-based mosquito repellent cream or spray.

Binoculars & Zoom Lenses

Wildlife is often spotted at a distance from the Chapramari watchtower to ensure human safety. A good pair of binoculars or a camera with a heavy zoom lens is essential for spotting bison or elephants near the tree line.

Murti Climate & Forest Closure Rules

Unlike the high-altitude hill stations, the Murti region is a tropical floodplain. The most crucial factor when planning your trip is the status of the Sanctuary rules regarding the monsoon season:

Monsoon (15th June to 15th September) - FORESTS CLOSED

CRITICAL NOTE: Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary is legally closed to all tourists from mid-June to mid-September every year due to animal breeding season and severe flooding. The Murti River swells dramatically during this time. While you can still book resorts and enjoy the monsoon rain, you cannot enter the core forests for safaris.

Winter (October to February) - Peak Tourist Season

This is undoubtedly the best time to visit Murti and Chapramari. The monsoon recedes, and the forests officially reopen. The weather drops to a very comfortable, cool temperature, perfect for afternoon river picnics. Due to extremely high demand, securing your njp to murti cab and safari tickets in advance is mandatory.

Spring/Summer (March to early June) - Hot but High Sightings

The weather becomes quite hot and humid during the day near the riverbed. However, this is paradoxically an excellent time for hardcore wildlife enthusiasts. As the smaller water bodies inside the forest dry up, elephants and bison are forced to congregate near the larger rivers and artificial salt licks near watchtowers, making animal sightings far more frequent.

Comprehensive Guide: Booking Your Murti Cab & Navigating Chapramari Safaris

Transit from Bagdogra and NJP to Murti

To experience the serene riverbeds of Murti and the dense elephant corridors of Chapramari, tourists primarily arrive at Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station in Siliguri. The distance from NJP to the Murti/Chalsa region is approximately 75 kilometers. This highly scenic highway journey cuts through the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, crosses the Teesta Barrage at Gajoldoba, and usually takes around 2 to 2.5 hours.

Because the best eco-resorts are nestled right along the riverbanks or deep within the fringes of the Chapramari forest, relying on shared public transport from Siliguri is highly impractical with luggage. By booking a dedicated NJP to Murti cab or a Bagdogra to Murti taxi through Siliguri Cab Rental, you guarantee a comfortable, direct drop to your exact lodge. Our competitive, fixed dooars taxi fare ensures you avoid the heavy surge pricing often demanded by local airport syndicates.

Understanding Chapramari Safari Logistics

The core attraction of this area is the Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary. It is vital to understand that private outside vehicles (including our outstation cabs) are strictly prohibited from entering the core jungle safari zones. To enter the forest, you must book a government-authorized Gypsy from the official Forest Department ticket counters located in either Lataguri or near the Murti bridge.

Our dooars sightseeing taxi service perfectly bridges this gap. If you book a local sightseeing package, our chauffeurs will drive you from your resort to the forest ticket counter early in the morning or late afternoon, wait for you while you complete your 2-hour jungle safari in the authorized Gypsy (typically heading to the Chukchuki or Chapramari watchtowers), and then safely transport you back to your hotel.

Vehicle Selection: Sedans vs. SUVs for the Forest

If your itinerary is confined strictly to a direct drop from NJP/Bagdogra to a prominent resort located near the main highway in Chalsa or Murti, a comfortable sedan or premium hatchback (like a Swift Dzire) is perfectly sufficient and budget-friendly.

However, if you plan to venture into offbeat areas, such as driving up to Suntalekhola or Bindu, or if your specific resort requires navigating unpaved dirt roads near the riverbed, an SUV is highly recommended. Vehicles like the Toyota Innova Crysta, Mahindra Scorpio, and Mahindra Xylo offer superior ground clearance to prevent undercarriage damage on bumpy forest trails, ensuring a smooth, secure journey.

Murti & Chapramari Travel FAQ

Common questions about river picnics, safaris, and forest closures.

Is Chapramari Sanctuary open during the monsoon?

No. This is a strict government rule. The Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary (along with Gorumara and Jaldapara) is legally closed to tourists from June 15th to September 15th every year. No jeep safaris or watchtower visits are permitted during this period due to animal breeding season and heavy flooding.

Can we bathe in the Murti River?

During the dry winter and spring months, the river is generally shallow and calm, making wading and light bathing very popular among tourists. However, during and immediately after the monsoon season, the water levels rise dramatically and currents become extremely dangerous. Always consult locals or resort staff before entering the water.

Does my cab fare include the Chapramari Safari ticket?

No. Booking an outstation cab or a local sightseeing taxi with Siliguri Cab Rental only covers your road transportation to the forest ticket counters. You must purchase the actual Gypsy safari tickets directly from the Forest Department counter upon presenting your original ID proof (Aadhar/Voter ID).
