Attraction Overview

Kaziranga National Park is a globally renowned wildlife sanctuary spanning the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of Assam. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it covers over 430 square kilometers of tall elephant grass, marshland, and dense tropical broadleaf forests. The park is most famous for harboring the world's largest population of the Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros, along with high densities of tigers, wild Asiatic water buffalo, and swamp deer.

Because of its massive size, the park is divided into four main tourist ranges: Central (Kohora), Western (Bagori), Eastern (Agaratoli), and Burapahar. The Kohora and Bagori ranges are the most popular for both the iconic early morning Elephant Safaris and afternoon Jeep Safaris. Getting to Kaziranga requires a dedicated outstation cab, usually starting from Guwahati (approx. 200 KM) or directly from Siliguri/Bagdogra (approx. 450 KM) for tourists doing a comprehensive North East tour.

Things to Do in Kaziranga

Make the most of your wildlife expedition in Assam's greatest park.

Elephant Safari (Bagori/Kohora)

The definitive Kaziranga experience. Conducted at dawn (typically starting at 5:30 AM), these safaris allow you to ride atop a trained elephant directly into the tall, 15-foot elephant grass. It offers the safest and closest encounters with the rhinos, as the wild animals are unbothered by the presence of another elephant.

Jeep Safari across Ranges

If you miss the elephant safari, the authorized open-top Gypsy safaris are excellent. They operate in the morning and afternoon. The Eastern Range (Agaratoli) is best for bird watching and tigers, while the Central Range (Kohora) is great for varied wildlife, including water buffalo and swamp deer.

Orchid Park & Tea Estates

When not on safari, visit the Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park, which houses over 500 species of wild orchids and hosts traditional Assamese Bihu dance performances. Surrounding the park are sprawling, beautiful Assam tea estates where you can take leisurely walks.

Travel Checklist

What to Pack for Kaziranga

Preparing for safaris in the vast, open floodplains of the Brahmaputra requires specific gear to handle the sun, dust, and insects.

Original ID Proofs

MANDATORY: To book any forest safari (especially the highly regulated elephant safari) from the government counters, you must present original, physical copies of your Government ID proof (Aadhar or Voter ID). Digital copies on phones are frequently rejected.

Earthy Clothing & Dust Masks

During jeep safaris, you will drive over unpaved dirt tracks which generate massive amounts of dust. Wear earthy-toned clothes (olive green, khaki) and carry a good dust mask or scarf to cover your face.

Strong Mosquito Repellent

Because the park is built on a massive floodplain, mosquitoes and other insects are highly prevalent, especially during the early morning elephant safaris or late evenings. Pack a strong, DEET-based mosquito repellent.

Binoculars & Sun Protection

Kaziranga is vast. To spot tigers or distant rhinos, a good pair of binoculars is essential. Additionally, the afternoon jeep safaris offer no shade from the harsh sun, so wide-brimmed hats and high-SPF sunscreen are vital.

  • Distance: ~200 KM from Guwahati
  • Transit Time: ~4.5 Hours

Kaziranga Climate & Forest Closure Rules

Because Kaziranga sits on the floodplains of the massive Brahmaputra River, its operational status is entirely dependent on the monsoon schedule. Read our seasonal guide carefully:

Monsoon (May to October) - FORESTS STRICTLY CLOSED

CRITICAL NOTE: Kaziranga National Park is legally closed to all tourists usually from May 1st to October 31st. During the monsoon, the Brahmaputra River overflows, and up to 80% of the park can be completely submerged under water. No safaris are conducted, and animals migrate to higher grounds in the Karbi Anglong hills.

Winter (November to February) - Peak Tourist Season

This is the best time to visit Kaziranga. The floodwaters recede, the trails dry up, and the park officially reopens. The weather is cool and highly pleasant, making the early morning elephant safaris very comfortable. Due to massive international demand, securing your resort and guwahati to kaziranga cab months in advance is critical.

Spring (March to April) - Hot but Best for Sightings

The weather becomes quite hot and humid, and the forest department often begins controlled burning of the tall elephant grass to encourage new growth. Because the grass is shorter and the water bodies dry up, visibility is incredibly high, making this the best season for spotting tigers and rhinos from a distance.

Comprehensive Guide: Booking Your Kaziranga Cab & Navigating the Ranges

Transit from Guwahati to Kaziranga National Park

To access the incredible wildlife of Kaziranga National Park, the vast majority of tourists arrive at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. The distance from Guwahati to Kaziranga (specifically the central Kohora range where most resorts are located) is approximately 200 kilometers. This journey involves a straight, relatively flat highway drive that takes about 4.5 to 5 hours.

While there are public buses available, they restrict your ability to travel easily between your resort and the different safari entry gates once you arrive. By booking a dedicated Guwahati to Kaziranga taxi through Siliguri Cab Rental, you secure a private vehicle that not only provides a smooth outstation transit but remains with you to facilitate all internal commuting between the park's massive, separated ranges. For travelers arriving via North Bengal, we also provide long-distance Siliguri to Assam cabs.

Understanding Kaziranga Safari Logistics & The 4 Ranges

It is vital to understand that Kaziranga is absolutely enormous. It is divided into four main tourist zones: Kohora (Central), Bagori (Western), Agaratoli (Eastern), and Burapahar. Each range has its own separate entry gate, and they are located several kilometers apart along the main highway.

Private outside vehicles (including our outstation cabs) are strictly prohibited from entering the core jungle safari zones. To enter the forest, you must book a government-authorized open-top Gypsy or an Elephant Safari. However, you absolutely need your dedicated outstation cab to drop you from your resort to the specific gate where your safari is booked (e.g., waking up at 4:30 AM to drive to the Bagori gate for your elephant ride). Without a dedicated vehicle at your disposal, managing these internal logistics is extremely difficult.

Vehicle Selection: Sedans vs. SUVs for Assam Highways

If your itinerary consists of a drop from Guwahati to a resort located on the main highway near Kohora, a comfortable sedan (like a Swift Dzire or Toyota Etios) is perfectly sufficient and highly economical for the flat highway drive.

However, if you plan an extended tour venturing to offbeat destinations like Majuli Island or the hilly terrain of Shillong/Meghalaya after your Kaziranga trip, an SUV is highly recommended. Vehicles like the Toyota Innova Crysta or Mahindra Scorpio provide significantly better luggage capacity and suspension, ensuring a much smoother ride during long interstate multi-day trips.

Kaziranga Travel FAQ

Common questions about safaris, closures, and booking outstation taxis.

Is Kaziranga National Park open during the monsoon?

No. This is a strict government rule. Kaziranga is situated directly on the Brahmaputra floodplain. The park is legally closed to all tourists usually from May 1st to October 31st every year due to severe flooding that submerges the majority of the park. No safaris are permitted during this period.

Does my cab fare include the Safari tickets?

No. Booking an outstation cab with Siliguri Cab Rental only covers your road transportation (e.g., Guwahati to Kaziranga) and the local commuting between your resort and the different safari range gates. You must purchase the actual Gypsy or Elephant safari tickets separately from the forest department counters.

Which safari range is best for seeing rhinos?

For the iconic one-horned rhinoceros, the Western Range (Bagori) and the Central Range (Kohora) are considered the best. Elephant safaris in these zones offer incredibly close encounters with the rhinos in the tall grass. The Eastern Range (Agaratoli) is preferred for bird watching and tiger sightings.
