Attraction Overview

Manas National Park is an absolute treasure of biodiversity, located at the foothills of the Himalayas in Assam. Sharing its boundary directly with the Royal Manas National Park in Bhutan, it holds multiple prestigious titles: a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site, a Project Tiger reserve, an elephant reserve, and a biosphere reserve. The park is characterized by its incredibly dense forests, sweeping grasslands, and the beautiful Beki River that bisects the landscape.

Unlike the highly crowded Kaziranga, Manas offers a significantly quieter, more raw wilderness experience. It is world-famous for harboring endemic and highly endangered species, including the Assam Roofed Turtle, Hispid Hare, Golden Langur, and the Pygmy Hog. The park has three main ranges: Bansbari (Central), Panbari (Western), and Bhuyanpara (Eastern). Getting to the resorts near the Bansbari gate requires a dedicated outstation cab, usually from Guwahati (approx. 140 KM) or from NJP/Bagdogra (approx. 320 KM) if you are entering Assam via West Bengal.

Things to Do in Manas

Experience the raw wilderness and unique activities of Assam's biosphere reserve.

Extensive Jeep Safaris

The best way to explore Manas. A full-day jeep safari taking you from the Bansbari gate all the way to Mathanguri (near the Bhutan border) offers incredible transitions from grasslands to dense forests. Keep your eyes peeled for wild elephants, rhinos, clouded leopards, and tigers.

River Rafting on Beki

A highly unique offering at Manas. You can book a thrilling, yet scenic, river rafting experience on the gentle rapids of the Beki River. It provides an entirely different vantage point to spot migratory birds and animals coming to the riverbanks to drink.

Spotting Rare Primates

Manas is one of the only places in the world where you can spot the Golden Langur. Bird watchers will also be thrilled by the presence of the Great Hornbill and the Bengal Florican. Exploring the park with a knowledgeable forest guide is essential for spotting these rare species.

Travel Checklist

What to Pack for Manas

Preparing for safaris in the vast, open grasslands and dense foothills requires specific gear to handle the sun, dust, and insects.

Original ID Proofs

MANDATORY: To book any forest safari from the government counters in Bansbari, you must present original, physical copies of your Government ID proof (Aadhar or Voter ID). Digital copies on phones are frequently rejected by forest officials.

Earthy Clothing & Dust Masks

During jeep safaris, you will drive over unpaved dirt tracks which generate massive amounts of dust. Wear earthy-toned clothes (olive green, khaki) and carry a good dust mask or scarf to cover your face.

Strong Mosquito Repellent

Because the park is built around dense rivers and marshlands, mosquitoes and other insects are highly prevalent, especially during the early mornings or late evenings at the eco-resorts. Pack a strong, DEET-based mosquito repellent.

Binoculars & Sun Protection

Manas is vast. To spot tigers or distant golden langurs in the high canopy, a good pair of binoculars is essential. Additionally, the afternoon jeep safaris offer no shade from the harsh sun, so wide-brimmed hats and high-SPF sunscreen are vital.

  • Closed: June to October
  • Distance: ~140 KM from Guwahati

Manas Climate & Forest Closure Rules

Because Manas is situated on the terai floodplains, its operational status is highly dependent on the monsoon schedule. Read our seasonal guide carefully:

Monsoon (June to October) - FORESTS STRICTLY CLOSED

CRITICAL NOTE: Manas National Park is legally closed to all tourists usually from early June to late October. During the monsoon, the Beki River overflows, and heavy rains make the unpaved forest trails completely impassable. No safaris or river rafting are conducted during this time.

Winter (November to February) - Peak Tourist Season

This is the best time to visit Manas. The roads dry up, and the park officially reopens. The weather is cool and highly pleasant, making full-day jeep safaris very comfortable. The skies are clear, offering fantastic views of the Bhutan hills from Mathanguri. Due to high demand, securing your resort and guwahati to manas cab in advance is critical.

Spring (March to May) - Hot but Best for Sightings

The weather becomes quite hot and humid, and the forest department often begins controlled burning of the tall elephant grass to encourage new growth. Because the grass is shorter and the smaller water bodies dry up, visibility is incredibly high, making this the best season for spotting tigers and rhinos from a distance near the Beki River.

Comprehensive Guide: Booking Your Manas Cab & Navigating the Safaris

Transit from Guwahati and Siliguri to Manas National Park

To access the incredible, raw wilderness of Manas National Park, most tourists arrive at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati. The distance from Guwahati to Manas (specifically the primary Bansbari range where most resorts and safari counters are located) is approximately 140 kilometers. This journey involves a relatively flat highway drive that takes about 3.5 hours.

Because Manas is situated further west towards the Bengal border, many travelers combining Dooars and Assam choose to drive directly from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) or Bagdogra Airport (IXB) in Siliguri. This is a longer drive of about 320 kilometers (roughly 7 hours). By booking a dedicated Guwahati to Manas taxi or a long-distance Siliguri to Assam cab through Siliguri Cab Rental, you secure a private vehicle that provides a smooth outstation transit, dropping you directly at your eco-resort near the forest gates.

Understanding Manas Safari Logistics & The Bansbari Range

Manas is a massive biosphere reserve. It is primarily divided into three tourist zones: Bansbari (Central), Panbari (Western), and Bhuyanpara (Eastern). The Bansbari range is the most popular, best-developed, and the primary entry point for the thrilling full-day jeep safaris that take you all the way to Mathanguri (near the Bhutan border).

Private outside vehicles (including our outstation cabs) are strictly prohibited from entering the core jungle safari zones. To enter the forest, you must book a government-authorized open-top Gypsy from the forest department counters. However, you need your dedicated outstation cab to drop you from your resort to the specific gate where your safari or river rafting is booked. Our drivers ensure you reach the counters early in the morning before tickets sell out.

Vehicle Selection: Sedans vs. SUVs for Assam Highways

If your itinerary consists solely of a drop from Guwahati to a resort located on the main roads near the Bansbari range, a comfortable sedan (like a Swift Dzire or Toyota Etios) is highly economical for the flat highway drive.

However, if you are driving all the way from Siliguri/NJP, or if you plan to venture to offbeat areas or Kaziranga after your Manas trip, an SUV is highly recommended. Vehicles like the Toyota Innova Crysta or Mahindra Scorpio provide significantly better luggage capacity and suspension, ensuring a much smoother ride during long interstate multi-day trips across the North East.

Manas Travel FAQ

Common questions about safaris, closures, and booking outstation taxis.

Is Manas National Park open during the monsoon?

No. This is a strict government rule. Manas National Park is situated directly on the terai floodplains intersected by the Beki River. The park is legally closed to all tourists usually from early June to late October every year due to severe flooding. No jeep safaris or river rafting are permitted during this period.

Does my cab fare include the Safari tickets?

No. Booking an outstation cab with Siliguri Cab Rental only covers your road transportation (e.g., Guwahati to Manas) and the local commuting between your resort and the safari gates. You must purchase the actual Gypsy safari tickets or river rafting tickets separately from the forest department counters.

What is the difference between Manas and Kaziranga?

While Kaziranga is famous for its massive concentration of one-horned rhinos in tall grasslands and sees very high tourist traffic, Manas offers a quieter, more raw forest experience at the foothills of Bhutan. Manas is better known for its scenic beauty, the Beki River, and rare species like the Golden Langur and Pygmy Hog, alongside its tiger population.
