Attraction Overview

Nathula Pass is one of the most highly sought-after and geographically dramatic destinations in Sikkim. Located 56 kilometers from Gangtok at an elevation of 14,140 feet, it was once an integral part of the ancient Silk Route connecting India with Tibet. Today, it serves as an active, heavily guarded border post between India and China.

Visitors who secure the highly limited daily permits are allowed to ascend a short flight of stairs directly to the international border fence. Here, you can interact with the brave soldiers of the Indian Army and even see the Chinese military installations just meters away on the other side. Because of the extremely steep gradients, rocky patches, and military regulations, small hatchbacks and sedans are strictly prohibited from making this journey. You must book a high-clearance SUV, and the trip is always combined with visits to Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir en route.

Things to Do at Nathula Pass

Make the most of your highly restricted visit to the border.

The Border Fence

The ultimate highlight is walking up the final flight of stairs to the actual border line separating India and China. A small barbed wire fence is all that divides the two nations. You can see the Chinese outposts and watchtowers right across the divide. Photography is heavily restricted in certain zones here.

Sherathang & Army Canteen

Before reaching the final pass, your vehicle will stop at Sherathang, a high-altitude settlement with a massive Indian Army presence. You can visit the military canteen here to buy souvenirs, warm clothes, and enjoy hot tea and snacks subsidized by the army. You can also receive an official certificate verifying you visited Nathula.

Tsomgo & Baba Mandir En Route

A trip to Nathula Pass automatically encompasses the standard East Sikkim itinerary. You will stop at the incredibly beautiful, glacial Tsomgo (Changu) Lake for yak rides and photography, and pay your respects at the Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir either on the way up or during the descent.

Travel Checklist

What to Pack for Nathula

You are ascending to a highly sensitive military zone at 14,140 feet. Strict preparation and exact documentation are absolutely critical.

Original IDs & Photos

MANDATORY: You cannot pass the police check posts without an Army-stamped Protected Area Permit (PAP). Bring your original Voter ID or Passport (Aadhar is strictly rejected for border permits) and at least 4 passport-size photographs per person.

Extreme Winter Wear

Nathula is brutally cold and windy year-round. Pack heavy down jackets, thermals, waterproof gloves, and woolen beanies. The final ascent requires walking up stairs in thin air; keeping your core warm is essential to prevent exhaustion.

Altitude Sickness Meds

The rapid climb to 14,140 feet causes Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) in many travelers. Consult your doctor regarding Diamox. Carry a small, portable oxygen canister, stay highly hydrated, and avoid sudden, strenuous movements at the top.

Hard Cash

Network connectivity is deliberately jammed near the international border. UPI and digital payments will completely fail at Tsomgo, Sherathang, and Nathula. Carry sufficient small denomination cash for food, toilets, and souvenirs.

Nathula Pass Climate & Best Time to Visit

Because Nathula Pass is located in a high-altitude alpine military zone, the weather dictates whether the Indian Army will even issue permits for the day. Read our seasonal guide carefully:

Winter (December to March) - Frozen & Unpredictable

During winter, the road to Nathula Pass is buried in deep snow. While it is incredibly beautiful, travel requires extreme flexibility. Heavy snowstorms frequently block the Jawaharlal Nehru Road past Tsomgo Lake, forcing the Army to deny permits to Nathula for days or weeks at a time.

Spring (April to May) - Peak Tourist Season

This is the most popular time to visit. The ice on the road melts sufficiently, making it safer for SUVs to reach the top. The weather is cold but manageable. Due to high demand and strict daily vehicle limits, securing your gangtok to nathula pass cab and requesting permits weeks in advance is critical.

Autumn (October to November) - Crisp & Clear

Following the monsoon, the skies clear up completely. This is the best time to visit Nathula Pass for photography and clear views of the Tibetan plateau. The temperatures begin to cool rapidly toward November, but the roads are dry and highly reliable.

Monsoon (June to September) - Highly Dangerous

Avoid visiting during heavy monsoons. The steep road from Gangtok to Nathula becomes treacherous, prone to severe landslides and thick fog that reduces visibility to zero. The Army frequently restricts civilian movement during heavy rains to prevent accidents.

Comprehensive Travel Guide: Booking Your Nathula Pass Cab & Navigating Strict Military Permits

Understanding the Nathula Pass Route

A visit to Nathula Pass is arguably the most thrilling and sought-after day trip in Sikkim. Located 56 kilometers from the capital city of Gangtok, the journey takes about 2.5 to 3 hours along the incredibly steep, winding, and often snow-covered Jawaharlal Nehru Road. Because this route leads directly to the highly sensitive Indo-China border, it is heavily regulated by the Indian Army, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and the Sikkim Tourism Department.

The trip is exclusively a day-trip from Gangtok; there is no civilian accommodation available near the pass. Your dedicated gangtok to nathula pass cab will typically depart between 7:30 AM and 8:00 AM. Along the way, the standard itinerary automatically includes stops at the sacred, glacial Tsomgo (Changu) Lake and the revered Baba Harbhajan Singh Mandir. By mid-afternoon, the military requires all civilian vehicles to begin descending back to Gangtok due to rapidly deteriorating weather and plummeting temperatures.

The Strict Army Permit System (PAP) & Foreigner Rules

Nathula Pass operates under the strictest permit regulations in the region. Foreign nationals are strictly prohibited from visiting Nathula Pass. Only Indian nationals are allowed to proceed up to the international border fence. Even for Indians, a specialized Protected Area Permit (PAP) specifically endorsed for Nathula is mandatory.

To limit environmental impact and maintain military security, the government restricts the number of vehicles allowed to visit Nathula each day (often capped at just a few hundred). Furthermore, the pass is completely closed to all tourists on Mondays and Tuesdays. When you book your Sikkim local sightseeing package with Siliguri Cab Rental, our ground operations team fights the queues to secure these highly competitive permits on your behalf. You must submit your original Indian Voter ID or Passport (Aadhar cards are rejected) and passport-sized photographs to our representative the evening prior to your trip.

Vehicle Selection: Why High-Clearance SUVs are Mandatory

The ascent from Gangtok (5,400 ft) to Nathula Pass (14,140 ft) is rapid and punishing. During the winter and spring months, the road past Tsomgo Lake is frequently covered in black ice, deep snow, and slush. During the monsoon, the same road turns into a muddy, landslide-prone track.

Due to these hazardous conditions, local transport authorities explicitly ban small hatchbacks and sedans from operating on the Nathula route. You must book a high-clearance SUV. Our specialized fleet includes heavy-duty Mahindra Scorpios, Mahindra Xylos, and premium Toyota Innova Crystas. The nathula pass taxi fare for a dedicated SUV ranges from ₹5,500 to ₹8,000 depending on the vehicle tier and peak season demand. The permit cost (which fluctuates based on government syndicates, usually ₹3,500 to ₹4,500 per vehicle) is charged extra. Our chauffeurs possess years of specialized experience driving on snow and ice, ensuring you reach the border with maximum safety.

Nathula Pass Travel FAQ

Common questions about border rules, age restrictions, and permits.

Is Nathula Pass open every day of the week?

No. Nathula Pass is strictly closed to all tourists on Mondays and Tuesdays for military maintenance and border operations. You can only plan your visit from Wednesday to Sunday. Ensure your Gangtok itinerary accounts for these closed days.

Are infants or elderly people allowed to visit Nathula?

Due to the extreme altitude of 14,140 feet, oxygen levels at Nathula Pass are perilously low. The authorities strictly prohibit children below the age of 5 (and often discourage those under 10) and elderly individuals with any history of respiratory, blood pressure, or heart conditions from visiting. Severe Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a very real risk.

Can I use my Aadhar Card to get the Nathula permit?

No. The permit issuing authorities in Sikkim (Police and Army) frequently reject Aadhar cards and Pan cards as valid proof of identity for highly sensitive border zones like Nathula. You MUST carry your original Voter ID Card or Passport, along with photocopies and passport-size photographs.
