Attraction Overview

North Sikkim, encompassing the Mangan district, is the most rugged, remote, and visually spectacular region of the state. The journey begins from Gangtok, driving deep into the alpine terrain toward the small villages of Lachen (base camp for Gurudongmar) and Lachung (base camp for Yumthang Valley). Due to the extreme altitude and distance, a North Sikkim trip requires a minimum of 2 Nights and 3 Days to safely complete.

The crown jewel of this expedition is Gurudongmar Lake. Sitting at an astonishing 17,800 feet, it is one of the highest lakes in the world. The lake remains partially frozen for most of the year, yet one specific corner never freezes, a phenomenon attributed to the blessings of Guru Padmasambhava. Equally stunning is the Yumthang Valley, a sprawling, U-shaped glacial valley that bursts into vibrant colors with blooming Rhododendrons during the spring. This entire region is a highly restricted military zone bordering Tibet, meaning robust, pre-approved Army permits and experienced local SUV drivers are an absolute necessity.

Core North Sikkim Destinations

Discover the extreme altitudes and breathtaking valleys of the North.

Gurudongmar Lake

Reached by departing Lachen at 4:00 AM, this sacred lake is surrounded by snow-clad peaks. The drive traverses a barren, high-altitude alpine desert that closely resembles the Tibetan plateau. Due to the incredibly thin air, tourists are advised not to spend more than 30 minutes at the lake to avoid severe altitude sickness.

Yumthang Valley of Flowers

Accessed via Lachung, Yumthang is a spectacular pasture surrounded by the Himalayan mountains. It is famous for its hot springs and the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary. During the spring months, the entire valley floor is carpeted with primulas, poppies, and vibrant rhododendrons, grazed by roaming yaks.

Zero Point (Yumesamdong)

Located another 23 kilometers further up from Yumthang Valley at an altitude of 15,300 feet, this is literally the end of the civilian road before the Chinese border. It remains snow-covered almost throughout the year. Note: Visiting Zero Point requires an extra on-the-spot fee paid to the driver.

Travel Checklist

What to Pack for North Sikkim

This is an extreme expedition into a frozen, military-regulated zone. Strict preparation is the difference between a safe trip and a dangerous one.

Original IDs & Photos

MANDATORY: You cannot pass the Mangan check post without a Protected Area Permit (PAP). Bring your original Voter ID or Passport (Aadhar is strictly rejected for border permits) and at least 4 passport-size photographs to hand to your driver in Gangtok.

Extreme Winter Gear

Temperatures at Gurudongmar frequently sit at -15°C with howling, biting winds. Pack heavy down jackets, multiple layers of thermals, windproof pants, insulated gloves, and woolen beanies covering your ears. You can rent snow boots in Lachen or Lachung.

Oxygen & Diamox

Altitude sickness is very common at 17,800 feet. Consult your doctor regarding Diamox before the trip. Carry a small, portable oxygen canister (available in Gangtok pharmacies), camphor (to smell for clear breathing), and stay highly hydrated.

Hard Cash

There are almost zero reliable ATMs or network connections beyond Mangan. UPI and card machines will absolutely fail in Lachen and Lachung. Carry sufficient hard cash to pay for meals, heaters at hotels, and the extra Zero Point trip.

Quick Facts

  • Avg Temp: -15°C to 12°C
  • Elevation: Up to 17,800 ft
  • Duration: Minimum 2N/3D
  • Starting Point: Gangtok
  • Permits: Mandatory PAP

North Sikkim Climate & Best Time to Visit

Because North Sikkim encompasses extreme alpine conditions, the weather dictates whether the army will even allow you to proceed. Read our seasonal guide carefully before planning:

Spring (April to May) - Peak Valley Season

This is arguably the best time to visit North Sikkim. The harsh winter ice melts away just enough to make the roads safe. The absolute highlight of this season is the Yumthang Valley, which bursts into a magnificent sea of colorful rhododendrons. Gurudongmar Lake begins to thaw. Book your Sikkim sightseeing taxi well in advance due to massive crowds.

Autumn (October to November) - Crisp & Clear

Following the monsoon, the skies clear up completely. The air is crisp, and the visibility of the Himalayan peaks is unparalleled. The roads are generally dry and safe. The temperatures begin to plummet rapidly toward November, turning Gurudongmar into a solid sheet of ice.

Winter (December to March) - Frozen & Unpredictable

During winter, North Sikkim turns into a frozen wonderland. Yumthang is draped in thick snow, and Gurudongmar is completely frozen solid. However, travel requires extreme flexibility. Heavy snowstorms frequently block the mountain passes from Lachen, forcing the Indian Army to halt all permits for days at a time.

Monsoon (June to September) - Highly Dangerous

Avoid visiting North Sikkim during heavy monsoons. The steep, unpaved roads connecting Gangtok to Lachen and Lachung become extremely treacherous, prone to severe, road-washing landslides. Entire sections of the highway can collapse, leaving tourists stranded for days. Permits are frequently denied.

Comprehensive Travel Guide: Booking Your North Sikkim Car Tour & Navigating Permits

Understanding the Lachen and Lachung Route

A visit to North Sikkim is not a standard sightseeing tour; it is a rigorous, high-altitude expedition. The journey absolutely must begin from the capital city of Gangtok. From Gangtok, the road splits further up the mountains into two distinct valleys. The first route leads to the village of Lachen (approx. 9,000 ft), which serves as the overnight base camp before ascending to the frozen expanses of Gurudongmar Lake. The second route leads to the village of Lachung (approx. 8,600 ft), the base camp for exploring the vibrant Yumthang Valley and Zero Point.

Because of the massive distances and treacherous, unpaved terrain, this expedition cannot be completed in a single day. A standard north sikkim car tour requires a minimum of 2 Nights and 3 Days (staying one night in Lachen and the next in Lachung). Booking a dedicated, heavy-duty Sikkim sightseeing taxi is not just a luxury here—it is a mandatory requirement imposed by the local transport syndicates to ensure passenger survival and safety on these brutal roads.

The Strict Army Permit System (PAP)

North Sikkim shares an extremely sensitive, highly militarized border with China (Tibet). Consequently, civilian movement is heavily restricted. You cannot travel past the Mangan check post without a Protected Area Permit (PAP). These permits are only issued in Gangtok by the Sikkim Police and the Indian Army on the morning of your departure.

When you book a Lachen Lachung tour package with Siliguri Cab Rental, our ground operations team completely handles this complex permit process. You must submit your original Indian Voter ID or Passport (Aadhar cards are widely rejected) and passport-sized photographs to our representative the evening prior. We secure the stamped approvals while you sleep, ensuring your vehicle can depart smoothly the next morning without you standing in bureaucratic lines.

Vehicle Selection: Why High-Clearance SUVs are Mandatory

The roads connecting Chungthang to Lachen, and further up to Gurudongmar Lake, are frequently washed out by landslides, covered in black ice, or reduced to muddy, rocky riverbeds. Due to these hazardous conditions, local transport authorities explicitly ban small hatchbacks and sedans from operating on the North Sikkim route.

You must book a high-clearance SUV. Our specialized fleet includes heavy-duty Mahindra Scorpios, Mahindra Xylos, and premium Toyota Innova Crystas. The standard north sikkim taxi fare for a 2N/3D trip typically starts around ₹15,500 for a standard SUV, while an Innova commands a premium at approximately ₹18,500. This fare includes the vehicle, driver allowances, fuel, and standard permit processing for the grueling terrain. Our chauffeurs possess years of specialized experience driving on snow and ice, ensuring you reach the sacred lakes with maximum safety.

North Sikkim Travel FAQ

Common questions about extreme altitudes, age restrictions, and permits.

Are children or elderly allowed to visit Gurudongmar Lake?

No. Due to the extreme altitude of 17,800 feet, the oxygen levels at Gurudongmar Lake are perilously low. The permit issuing authorities strictly prohibit children below the age of 5 (and often discourage children under 10) and elderly individuals with any history of respiratory, blood pressure, or heart conditions from visiting. If you travel with young children, they must remain at the hotel in Lachen or Gangtok with a guardian.

Can I book a cab from Bagdogra directly to Lachen?

No. Travel regulations dictate that all tourists must spend their first night in Gangtok. Permits for North Sikkim are only issued from Gangtok in the morning. Therefore, you must book a Bagdogra to Gangtok drop, stay the night, submit your documents, and begin the North Sikkim expedition the following morning.

Is Zero Point included in the standard North Sikkim package?

Generally, no. The standard 2N/3D North Sikkim itinerary covers Gurudongmar Lake and Yumthang Valley. Zero Point (Yumesamdong) is located 23 kilometers further up from Yumthang. If the road is clear of snow and you wish to visit, an extra on-the-spot fee (usually around ₹3,000 to ₹4,000 per vehicle) must be paid directly to the driver to cover the extra fuel and extreme terrain driving.
