Conquer the Heights at Tenzing Rock

Named after the legendary Mount Everest summiteer Tenzing Norgay, this massive natural rock on Lebong Cart Road offers a thrilling rock climbing experience for both amateurs and professionals. Book your dedicated local sightseeing cab for an action-packed visit.

Why Add Tenzing Rock to Your Itinerary?

If you want to inject a quick dose of adrenaline into your Darjeeling vacation, Tenzing Rock is the perfect stop. Located on the Lebong Cart Road, this gigantic natural rock face is actively used by the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) for training their students. However, the right face of the rock is open to tourists who want to experience the thrill of rock climbing under the strict supervision of trained local guides.

Tenzing Rock is situated very close to the Darjeeling Ropeway and the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park. Because of this proximity, it is flawlessly integrated into our Darjeeling 7-point sightseeing tour. Booking your local taxi with Siliguri Cab Rental ensures you have a private vehicle waiting for you on the narrow Lebong Cart Road while you spend 30 to 45 minutes scaling the rock and taking memorable photos of your adventure.

Highlights: What You Will Experience

You do not need to be a professional climber to enjoy this site. Here is what awaits you.

Amateur Rock Climbing

For a nominal fee, local guides will strap you into a professional safety harness and guide you up the easier tourist face of the rock. It’s a safe, exhilarating experience suitable for almost all age groups and fitness levels.

Gombu Rock

Directly opposite Tenzing Rock sits Gombu Rock, named after Nawang Gombu (the first man to climb Everest twice). This rock is much steeper and is generally reserved for serious climbers and HMI trainees.

Action Photography

Even if you choose not to climb, watching others ascend the massive rock face from the road below makes for excellent action photography. There are also local stalls selling tea and snacks to enjoy while you watch.

Adventure Checklist

What to Wear for Climbing

If you plan on attempting the climb, wearing the right clothing will make the experience much easier and safer.

Sports Shoes / Sneakers

You absolutely cannot climb the rock in heels, formal shoes, or slippery sandals. Wear comfortable sneakers with a good rubber grip to help you find footholds on the stone.

Flexible Activewear

Wear comfortable, flexible pants or track pants. Tight jeans or restrictive dresses will make it very difficult to stretch your legs to reach the climbing pegs.

Small Cash for the Guides

The climbing activity is managed by local trainers who charge a nominal fee (usually ₹50 to ₹100) to provide the safety harness and guidance. Carry small cash denominations.

Free Hands

You need both hands to climb. Leave your heavy backpacks, handbags, and expensive cameras inside our secure taxi while you do the activity.

Quick Facts

  • Timing: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Duration: ~30 to 45 Mins
  • Distance: 4 KM from Chowrasta
  • Climbing Fee: ~₹50 to ₹100 per person
  • Cab Fare: ~₹2,000 (7-Point Tour)

Best Time to Visit Tenzing Rock

Because rock climbing is an entirely outdoor, physical activity, weather plays a massive role in whether you can actually attempt the climb.

Spring & Autumn (March-May / Oct-Nov) - Ideal Conditions

These are the best seasons for climbing. The rock face is completely dry, providing excellent grip for your shoes and hands. The weather is cool, ensuring you don't exhaust yourself while climbing up the steep face.

Monsoon (June to September) - Avoid Climbing

During the monsoon, the natural rock becomes incredibly wet, covered in moss, and dangerously slippery. Tourist climbing activities are strictly suspended during heavy rains to prevent accidents. You can only view the rock from the road.

Winter (December to February) - Chilly but Safe

The rock is dry and perfectly safe to climb, but grasping the cold stone with bare hands in near-freezing temperatures can be quite painful. It is an exhilarating challenge if you don't mind the cold wind.

How to Reach Tenzing Rock & Local Taxi Drop Details

Navigating Lebong Cart Road

Tenzing Rock is located on Lebong Cart Road, roughly 4 kilometers away from the main Darjeeling town center (Chowrasta/Mall Road). Because the road is narrow and winds through residential and forest areas, it is not a practical walking distance for tourists. Hiring a Darjeeling local taxi is necessary to reach the site comfortably.

The rock sits in the same sightseeing circuit as the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), and the Darjeeling Ropeway. Rather than booking a point-to-point drop, which can leave you stranded waiting for a return cab on a narrow hill road, it is best to cluster these visits together.

Tenzing Rock Taxi Fares & 7-Point Packages

At Siliguri Cab Rental, we include Tenzing Rock as a core part of the highly popular 7-Point Darjeeling Local Sightseeing Tour. Our fixed fare for this comprehensive half-day tour (which includes Tenzing Rock, the Zoo, HMI, the Ropeway, Tea Garden, Japanese Temple, and Peace Pagoda) in a standard hatchback is approximately ₹2,000. Our driver will park safely nearby while you enjoy your climbing activity, take photos of Gombu Rock, and then seamlessly transport you to your next destination.
