Attraction Overview

South Khayerbari Leopard and Tiger Rescue Center is a completely unique wildlife facility located in the Alipurduar district, roughly 15 kilometers from Jaldapara National Park. Unlike traditional wildlife sanctuaries where you search for free-roaming animals, South Khayerbari was established specifically to rehabilitate leopards and tigers that were rescued from poachers, circuses, or human-wildlife conflict zones.

Situated gracefully on the banks of the Buri Torsa River, the park offers a highly serene, family-friendly environment. Visitors can take a special battery-operated car safari through the large, enclosed natural habitats where the rescued leopards live. Additionally, the park features a calm boating facility on the river, making it a perfect spot for children and elderly tourists who might find the rugged jeep safaris of Gorumara or Buxa too strenuous. Reaching this spot is usually done via a dedicated outstation cab from NJP or as a combined sightseeing stop from Madarihat (Jaldapara).

Things to Do in South Khayerbari

Make the most of your family-friendly wildlife excursion in the Dooars.

Battery Car Safari

To minimize noise and pollution, the forest department operates silent, battery-powered cars. These vehicles take you inside the expansive natural enclosures where rescued leopards live and roam freely within their protected boundaries. It guarantees a sighting, unlike wild safaris.

Buri Torsa Boating

The Buri Torsa river flows gently through the park. Visitors can rent small rowboats or paddleboats to navigate the calm waters. It is an incredibly peaceful experience, offering a different perspective of the surrounding forest canopy and birdlife.

Riverside Nature Walks

The entire rescue center is laid out like a massive, well-maintained park. You can take leisurely walks along the designated trails beside the river. It is a fantastic location for a daytime picnic or simply relaxing in nature, making it ideal for families with young children or elderly members.

Travel Checklist

What to Pack for Khayerbari

While South Khayerbari is highly accessible and family-friendly, standard tropical forest preparation is still recommended.

ID Proofs

Unlike the core safari zones of Gorumara, South Khayerbari acts more like a rescue park. However, carrying your original Government ID proof (Aadhar or Voter ID) is still recommended when purchasing entry tickets at the forest counter.

Comfortable Clothing

The Dooars region is typically warm and humid. Pack light, breathable cotton clothes. Since you are still in a forest environment, earthy tones (greens, browns) are preferred, and comfortable walking shoes are necessary for strolling the park.

Mosquito Repellent

Because the park is situated directly on the banks of the Buri Torsa river, mosquitoes and insects are prevalent, especially in the late afternoon. Pack a strong mosquito repellent cream or spray.

Camera & Zoom Lens

You will have the opportunity to see leopards from the battery-operated cars. To capture good photographs through the fencing or from a distance, a camera with a decent zoom lens is highly recommended.

South Khayerbari Climate & Forest Rules

Because South Khayerbari falls under the jurisdiction of the forest department in the Dooars floodplain, it adheres to standard wildlife sanctuary rules regarding the monsoon season:

Monsoon (15th June to 15th September) - FORESTS CLOSED

CRITICAL NOTE: Like Jaldapara and Gorumara, the core areas and safaris in South Khayerbari are legally closed to tourists from mid-June to mid-September every year. The Buri Torsa river also floods, making boating impossible.

Winter (October to February) - Peak Tourist Season

This is undoubtedly the best time to visit South Khayerbari. The weather drops to a very comfortable, cool temperature, making it perfect for walking around the park and enjoying the river boating. The skies are clear, and humidity is low.

Spring/Summer (March to early June) - Warm & Clear

The weather becomes quite hot and humid during the day. However, because you are exploring a shaded park and taking battery-operated car rides, it remains a pleasant excursion compared to the harsh, open-top jeep safaris in the wild.

Comprehensive Guide: Booking Your South Khayerbari Cab & Sightseeing Itinerary

Transit from Bagdogra and NJP to Khayerbari

To visit the unique South Khayerbari Leopard and Tiger Rescue Center, you must travel to the Alipurduar district in the Dooars. Most tourists arrive at Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station in Siliguri. The distance from NJP to the Khayerbari/Madarihat area is approximately 115 kilometers. The journey is incredibly scenic, passing through thick tea estates, over rivers like the Teesta and Jaldhaka, and takes roughly 3 hours along NH31C.

Because South Khayerbari is located deep within the forest fringes and away from major public bus routes, relying on shared transport with luggage is physically taxing. By booking a dedicated NJP to Madarihat cab or a Bagdogra to Khayerbari taxi through Siliguri Cab Rental, you secure a highly comfortable, sanitized vehicle that provides a direct drop to your exact forest lodge. Our fixed dooars taxi fare ensures you avoid the heavy surge pricing often demanded by local airport syndicates.

Understanding Khayerbari Logistics & Sightseeing

South Khayerbari is distinctly different from the wild safaris of Gorumara or Jaldapara. It operates as a rescue and rehabilitation center. Therefore, you do not need to wake up at 4:00 AM to queue for jeep safari tickets. Visitors can arrive comfortably during the day, purchase entry tickets at the gate, and enjoy the battery-operated car safaris that take you through the leopard enclosures.

Because it is a highly relaxed environment featuring the Buri Torsa river, it is immensely popular with families, children, and elderly travelers. Our dooars sightseeing taxi service is the perfect way to integrate this park into your wider itinerary. Our chauffeurs typically arrange a visit to South Khayerbari either as a half-day excursion from your Madarihat resort, or as an en route stop while transferring you between Lataguri and Jaldapara.

Vehicle Selection: Sedans vs. SUVs for the Dooars Highway

If your itinerary consists solely of a direct drop from NJP/Bagdogra to a resort located on the main highway near Madarihat or Khayerbari, a comfortable sedan (like a Swift Dzire or Toyota Etios) is budget-friendly and provides a smooth ride on the paved NH31C.

However, if you plan to venture into offbeat destinations around the park—such as navigating into the incredibly dense Chilapata Forest or crossing the rocky riverbeds towards Buxa and Jayanti—a high-clearance SUV is strictly recommended. Vehicles like the Toyota Innova Crysta, Mahindra Scorpio, and Mahindra Xylo offer superior ground clearance to prevent undercarriage damage on bumpy, unpaved forest trails, ensuring a smooth, secure journey throughout the Dooars wilderness.

South Khayerbari Travel FAQ

Common questions about the rescue center, safaris, and closures.

Is South Khayerbari open during the monsoon?

No. The South Khayerbari Leopard Rescue Center, along with all other major National Parks in the Dooars (Gorumara, Jaldapara, Buxa), is legally closed to tourists from June 15th to September 15th every year. The Buri Torsa river also swells heavily during this time, halting all boating activities.

Can we see tigers roaring in the wild here?

No, this is a very important distinction. South Khayerbari is a rescue and rehabilitation center, not an open wild safari like Kaziranga or Gorumara. The tigers and leopards here have been rescued from poachers or circuses. They are kept in large, natural but enclosed habitats to live out their lives safely. You view them from the safety of battery-operated cars driving through the enclosures.

Does my cab fare include the entry or boating ticket?

No. Booking an outstation cab or a local sightseeing taxi with Siliguri Cab Rental only covers your road transportation to the gates of South Khayerbari. You must purchase the actual entry tickets, battery car safari tickets, and boating tickets directly from the Forest Department counter located at the entrance.
