Why Visit Tonglu?
At a staggering altitude of 10,075 feet (3,071 meters), Tonglu is one of the highest peaks in the Darjeeling district and forms a major segment of the famous Singalila Ridge. It lies inside the Singalila National Park, located approximately 11 kilometers uphill from the base camp at Manebhanjan. For many trekkers and tourists taking the vintage Land Rover safari, Tonglu serves as the first major overnight halt before proceeding to Sandakphu.
The primary reason adventurers flock to Tonglu is its mesmerizing, unobstructed view of the Kanchenjunga massif (The Sleeping Buddha). Unlike Sandakphu, which can be immensely crowded during peak seasons, Tonglu offers a slightly quieter, more serene sunrise experience. Since standard cars cannot reach Tonglu, your journey starts by booking a comfortable taxi from NJP or Bagdogra to Manebhanjan with Siliguri Cab Rental, followed by a trek or 4x4 ride up the ridge.
