Singalila Ridge Viewpoint

Witness the Sunrise at Tonglu

Standing tall at 10,075 feet, Tonglu is one of the highest peaks on the Singalila Ridge. Famous for its sweeping panoramic views of Mount Kanchenjunga and the Sleeping Buddha, it is a quintessential stop on the Sandakphu trek. Book your base camp taxi drop today.

Why Visit Tonglu?

At a staggering altitude of 10,075 feet (3,071 meters), Tonglu is one of the highest peaks in the Darjeeling district and forms a major segment of the famous Singalila Ridge. It lies inside the Singalila National Park, located approximately 11 kilometers uphill from the base camp at Manebhanjan. For many trekkers and tourists taking the vintage Land Rover safari, Tonglu serves as the first major overnight halt before proceeding to Sandakphu.

The primary reason adventurers flock to Tonglu is its mesmerizing, unobstructed view of the Kanchenjunga massif (The Sleeping Buddha). Unlike Sandakphu, which can be immensely crowded during peak seasons, Tonglu offers a slightly quieter, more serene sunrise experience. Since standard cars cannot reach Tonglu, your journey starts by booking a comfortable taxi from NJP or Bagdogra to Manebhanjan with Siliguri Cab Rental, followed by a trek or 4x4 ride up the ridge.

Highlights: What You Will Experience

Tonglu offers dramatic landscapes and some of the best high-altitude views in West Bengal.

The Sleeping Buddha Sunrise

Wake up before dawn and step out of your trekker's hut. The sight of the first rays of the sun turning the snow-capped Kanchenjunga peaks into burning gold is an unforgettable, soul-stirring experience.

Tonglu Lake

Near the summit lies a small, serene pond known as Tonglu Lake. On clear, still days, the water acts as a perfect mirror, capturing stunning reflections of the surrounding hills and the deep blue Himalayan sky.

The Trekkers Hut

Tonglu is home to one of the most famous GTA (Gorkhaland Territorial Administration) Trekkers Huts. Staying overnight in this basic but cozy lodge, with the howling mountain winds outside, is a quintessential part of the Singalila trek.

High Altitude Checklist

What to Bring to Tonglu

At over 10,000 feet, weather conditions can change rapidly. Proper preparation is essential.

Extreme Winter Wear

Tonglu is highly exposed to biting, freezing winds that sweep across the Singalila Ridge. Thermal inners, a heavy down jacket, gloves, and a woolen beanie are absolutely necessary, even in Spring.

Power Banks

Electricity is highly unreliable at the Trekkers Hut and largely depends on solar power. Bring fully charged, high-capacity power banks to keep your cameras and phones running for the sunrise.

Headlamp / Torch

You will need to wake up around 4:30 AM and walk a short distance in pitch darkness to get to the best viewpoint for the Kanchenjunga sunrise. A good headlamp is vital.

Park Permits

Tonglu falls inside the Singalila National Park. Ensure your mandatory park permits and guide allocations are sorted at the Manebhanjan base camp before ascending.

Quick Facts

  • Altitude: 10,075 ft (3,071 m)
  • Distance: 11 km from Manebhanjan
  • Trek Time: 5 to 6 Hours from base
  • Stay: GTA Trekkers Hut
  • Cab Drop: NJP to Manebhanjan (~₹3,500)

Best Time for the Tonglu Trek

Because Tonglu is a high-altitude viewpoint in a National Park, timing your visit around the Himalayan weather seasons is critical:

Spring (March to May) - Rhododendron Blooms

This is a magical time to trek to Tonglu. The dense forests along the trail from Meghma to Tonglu burst into vibrant pink, red, and white colors with blooming Rhododendrons and Magnolias. The weather is crisp but pleasant.

Autumn (October to Early December) - Clear Views

If your primary reason for visiting Tonglu is to witness the sunrise over Kanchenjunga, Autumn is the absolute best time. The monsoon clouds have vanished, leaving the skies incredibly clear, though the nights become freezing cold.

Monsoon (July to September) - Park Closed

Trekking is prohibited during this time. The Singalila National Park is officially closed to tourists for wildlife breeding and due to the severe risk of landslides on the steep mountainous roads.

How to Reach Tonglu from NJP/Siliguri & Taxi Details

Reaching the Base (Manebhanjan)

Before you can reach Tonglu, you must first arrive at Manebhanjan, the official base camp for the Sandakphu trek. Manebhanjan is located about 90 kilometers from Siliguri, NJP Railway Station, and Bagdogra Airport. Standard tourist taxis, hatchbacks, and sedans can easily travel up to Manebhanjan via the scenic Mirik route. You can book a direct, point-to-point drop from the plains to Manebhanjan with Siliguri Cab Rental. The journey takes about 3.5 to 4 hours.

Manebhanjan to Tonglu

The 11-kilometer stretch from Manebhanjan to Tonglu is incredibly steep and paved with rough boulders. Standard commercial taxis are not permitted or capable of driving up this route into the Singalila National Park.

To cover this distance, you have two options: you can either trek on foot (which takes about 5 to 6 hours), or you can hire the iconic, vintage 4x4 Land Rovers operated by the local Highlander Guides and Porters Association at the Manebhanjan syndicate. These rugged vehicles will drop you off at Tonglu or take you all the way up to Sandakphu.
