The upcoming 2 km trek to Kaiyakatta is incredibly steep and draining. Gairibas is the last place to buy water bottles, chocolates, and energy bars before the strenuous ascent.

Windcheater / Rain Gear

Best Time for the Singalila Trek (Gairibas)

Because Gairibas lies deeply within the Singalila National Park, timing your visit around the Himalayan weather seasons is critical:

Spring (March to May) - Rhododendron Blooms

This is the absolute best time to experience Gairibas. The valley and surrounding forests burst into incredibly vibrant colors with blooming Rhododendrons and Magnolias. The weather is cool, making the steep ascent post-Gairibas much more manageable.

Autumn (October to Early December) - Clear & Crisp

The post-monsoon season offers the clearest skies. While Gairibas itself is surrounded by hills and doesn't offer massive Kanchenjunga views like Tumling, the clear weather makes the grueling uphill trek toward Kalipokhri much less humid.

How to Reach Gairibas from NJP/Siliguri & Taxi Details

Reaching the Base (Manebhanjan)

Before you can reach Gairibas, you must first arrive at Manebhanjan, the official base camp for the Sandakphu trek. Manebhanjan is located about 90 kilometers from Siliguri, NJP Railway Station, and Bagdogra Airport. Standard tourist taxis, hatchbacks, and sedans can easily travel up to Manebhanjan via the scenic Mirik route. You can book a direct, point-to-point drop from the plains to Manebhanjan with Siliguri Cab Rental. The journey takes about 3.5 to 4 hours.

Manebhanjan to Gairibas

The roughly 20-kilometer stretch from Manebhanjan up to Gairibas is incredibly steep and paved with rough boulders. Standard commercial taxis are not permitted or capable of driving up this route towards the Singalila National Park.

To cover this distance, you have two options: you can either trek on foot (which is usually broken into a 2-day journey for most trekkers, halting at Tumling), or you can hire the iconic, vintage 4x4 Land Rovers operated by the local Highlander Guides and Porters Association at the Manebhanjan syndicate. These rugged vehicles will drop you off exactly at Gairibas or continue up to Sandakphu.

Do I stay overnight in Gairibas?

It depends on your itinerary. While Gairibas does have a GTA Trekkers Hut and a few tea houses, most trekkers prefer to rest here for a couple of hours, grab lunch, and then push forward to stay overnight at Kalipokhri to shorten the next day's climb to Sandakphu.

Are there ATMs or mobile networks in Gairibas?

No. There are no ATMs beyond Manebhanjan. The mobile network in Gairibas is practically non-existent. You must carry sufficient physical cash (INR) for your meals and accommodation.
