Why Start Your Trek at Dhotrey?
While Manebhanjan is the traditional and most famous base camp for the Sandakphu trek, seasoned trekkers often prefer starting from Dhotrey. Located at a higher altitude of 8,500 feet, Dhotrey is a small, incredibly peaceful village situated inside the buffer zone of the Singalila National Park.
Starting from Dhotrey offers a massive strategic advantage: it completely bypasses the notoriously brutal, steep 3-kilometer boulder climb from Manebhanjan to Chitrey. Instead, the 7-kilometer trail from Dhotrey to Tonglu (where the route merges with the main trail) is a highly scenic, moderately graded walk through a stunning canopy of towering pine, birch, and rhododendron trees. Regular tourist taxis can reach this village, so you can easily book a direct drop from NJP Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport with Siliguri Cab Rental and wake up fresh in the mountains.
