Unlike a single viewpoint, the ridge is an expansive geographical feature that encompasses the entire trekking route from Manebhanjan all the way to Phalut.

Trekking the Singalila Ridge is widely considered one of the finest walking experiences in the Himalayas. As you hike along the spine of the ridge, your left side looks deep into the valleys of Nepal, while your right side overlooks the sprawling tea gardens of Darjeeling. The trail peaks at Sandakphu (11,930 ft) and Phalut (11,811 ft), offering unhindered, continuous views of four of the world's five highest peaks. What to Know Before Trekking

You will be completely off the grid for 4 to 6 days. Strict preparation at the base camp is mandatory.

Mandatory Permits

The entire ridge lies within the Singalila National Park. You cannot trek independently. You must secure permits and hire a local registered guide from the Highlander Association in Manebhanjan before starting.

Layered Clothing

The weather on the ridge is highly unpredictable. A sunny morning walk can quickly turn into a freezing, misty afternoon. Dress in easily removable layers, and always keep a high-quality windcheater handy.

Only Cash Works

There are zero ATMs on the ridge, and mobile networks (Indian) do not work for 90% of the trek. You must carry enough physical Indian Rupees to pay for all your homestays, meals, and emergencies.

Medical Kit

As you walk between 9,000 ft and 12,000 ft, blisters, knee pain, and mild altitude sickness are common. Carry blister tapes, knee caps, pain relievers, and consult your guide regarding AMS medications.

Best Time to Trek the Singalila Ridge

Because you are walking on an exposed, high-altitude ridge inside a National Park, timing your trek around the Himalayan weather seasons is critical:

Autumn (October to Early December) - Unmatched Views

This is universally considered the best time for photography and viewing the peaks. The monsoon has washed away the haze, leaving the skies exceptionally clear. The sunsets and sunrises from Sandakphu and Tonglu are spectacular, though nights are freezing.

Spring (March to May) - The Alpine Bloom

Spring brings relatively warmer weather to the ridge. The biggest draw during this season is the blooming of the giant Rhododendron and Magnolia forests, painting the entire trail from Chitrey to Kalipokhri in vivid pinks and reds.

Monsoon (July to September) - Trekking Prohibited

The ridge is completely closed to tourism. The Singalila National Park shuts down for wildlife breeding. The dirt trails become highly unstable, prone to dangerous landslides, and heavily infested with leeches.

How to Reach the Singalila Ridge from NJP/Siliguri & Taxi Details

Reaching the Base (Manebhanjan)

Before you can step foot onto the Singalila Ridge, you must first arrive at Manebhanjan, the official base camp for the trek. Manebhanjan is located about 90 kilometers from Siliguri, NJP Railway Station, and Bagdogra Airport. Standard tourist taxis, hatchbacks, and sedans can easily travel up to Manebhanjan via the scenic Mirik route. You can book a direct, point-to-point drop from the plains to Manebhanjan with Siliguri Cab Rental. The journey takes about 3.5 to 4 hours.

Manebhanjan to the Ridge (Sandakphu)

The entire 31-kilometer stretch from Manebhanjan up to Sandakphu is unpaved and incredibly steep. Standard commercial taxis from NJP are not permitted or capable of driving up this route inside the Singalila National Park.

To travel the ridge, you have two options: you can either trek on foot (which is usually broken into a 3 to 6-day journey depending on if you go to Phalut), or you can hire the iconic, vintage 4x4 Land Rovers operated by the local Highlander Guides and Porters Association at the Manebhanjan syndicate. These rugged vehicles will drive you directly along the ridge to Sandakphu and back.

Do I need a passport to walk the ridge?

No. While the trail weaves constantly between India and Nepal, Indian citizens do not need a visa or passport to walk the ridge or stay in the Nepalese homestays (like Tumling). You only need a standard valid government ID (like Aadhar or Voter ID) for the SSB check-posts and Singalila National Park permits.

Can I drive my own car along the ridge?

No. Private vehicles and standard commercial taxis from the plains are strictly not permitted past Manebhanjan. The road is extremely dangerous. You must hire a registered vintage 4x4 Land Rover driven by the local Manebhanjan syndicate.

How difficult is the Singalila Ridge trek?
